Great Teacher’s Conference Book Discussion

On 11/10/18 at 8:55am, I attended the Great Teacher’s Conference after-lunch session at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill, NC presented by Alison Consol of Wake Technical Community College.

Get In The Mood

We started the session off with a stretching session and some breathing and visaullization exercises. This was great.¬† ūüôā

Phase One: Book Discussions

Phase one started on a brief discussion regarding the books we’ve brought. I thought this was great, because I had only had a chance to look at three of the books, and once while I was taking some notes on one, I had to hustle to the next meeting, so it was nice to have some show and tell.

We were asked to discuss the books and why we brought them, specifically, what someone could find from that material.

Option B by Sheryl Sandburg and Adam Grant was the first book discussed, so I’ll give it a little bit of extra space and wording for being first. It gave plenty of options on how to talk to someone who is having a hard time and talk to someone who’s going though a traumatic event. This can be very useful to teachers who are also advisors. For example: What basic things can you say or do to lead them through their troubles or encourage them to seek counsellors if needed?

At this point, we discussed several great books, and quite a few stood out.

1,001 Great Thoughts On Teaching- This was a book that one teacher kept in their work area, and on “down” days, she used 1-2 to get herself up for the classroom.

How the Brain Works- studies and practical suggestions on how to approach the classroom to help students drink in the materials and retain it. The teacher mentioned that they used this to double-check themselves with new material: AM I being realistic? How can they use the time?

Teaching STEM- The point of a great teacher is not to lift the D and F students, it is to convert the C students to B and A students. You will always have D and F students. Studies inside this book were very helpful. Learning off a screen for students was deeply preferred, but written materials are retained more readily. Writing is more important than typing.

Six Easy Pieces- by Richard Feynman. It teaches physics easily without watering down the content.

The English Book- This was a nice amalgam book, with teachers from across the country each showcasing their compositions and describes their lessons as well as how it was approached in literature. As it was described by the teacher: “We are all taught english, but we are expected to know how to teach items in practice while focusing on the mechanics of the situation. Everyone communicates if you connect- direct connection to why the world needs to communicate. IF they are quiet, nothing good comes in the teaching environment, especially speaking between the lines- they may not ask the right questions because the quiestion could be “not right” and pares down the fluff of the questions and pieces how to get directly involved with communications.”

How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul- This book was one I brought. It had sections from different famous graphic designers that talked about how important it was to bring the important things into account when discussing your job in the workplace. It isn’t all about the money, it can’t be, or you’ll leave everything you value behind.

Before Phase two, we noted that the classes were funded by whiting turner. We were told if we’d like, we can write letters, and we’ll have them delivered together. Or we can think on it for a while, and have the materials delivered at a later date.

Phase Two: Discussing Our Problems

Phase two was talking about our solutions. Just to reiterate Our rules:

  1. Define the problem briefly.
  2. Do not justify it. If its a problem, its legit.
  3. No problem can be solved with the thinking that created it.
  4. If it is said here, it needs to stay here.
  5. Define what cannot be changed.
  6. Reality is real. We are here to solve some problems, but not all problems should be solved. THink about the problem with the priest, drunkard, and engineer.

    A priest, a drunkard, and an engineer are taken to the guillotine…

    On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the midst of the French Revolution the revolting citizens led a priest, a drunkard and an engineer to the guillotine. They ask the priest if he wants to face up or down when he meets his fate. The priest says he would like to face up so he will be looking towards heaven when he dies. They raise the blade of the guillotine and release it. It comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. The authorities take this as divine intervention and release the priest.

    The drunkard comes to the guillotine next. He also decides to die face up, hoping that he will be as fortunate as the priest. They raise the blade of the guillotine and release it. It comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. Again, the authorities take this as a sign of divine intervention, and they release the drunkard as well.

    Next is the engineer. He, too, decides to die facing up. As they slowly raise the blade of the guillotine, the engineer suddenly says, “Hey, I see what your problem is …”

 

We’ll use the same format as before, and continuing around in a circle, responding more than once if time allows. We use the same rules with whining, griping, and telling war stories. Add to this that all parties are involved, but we should keep the arguments from back and forth between 2 parties.

Great Teacher’s Conference Keynote

3rd annual Kelly markson, caralyn house, meghan macintyre, alison consol,  lead coordinator from RTP Campus.

After a short Intro with our group facilitators and team members, we began the discovery process. We paired up with one another based on our years of experience. We began by creating a line with members at one end (half a year) and in the other end with the longest teachers (27.5 years!). We then paired up. Rather than folding the line in half, in a method similar to DNA replication, the line split and moved in opposite directions around the room, meeting again on the far side of the room. Both halves of the line met in a handshake, reconnecting to learn about one another. My partner was Mark DeCain.

After getting to know one another, we then had to introduce each other in a fashion similar to a tweet format in 160 characters.

Mark has my same birthday. His tweet intro was “Tinkerer, Father, Insatiably Curious.” My introduction was “Father, Standard Nerd, No Hobbies”. We later Learned that our partners would then be our lunch dates.

 

We are a very diverse group on individuals, and have a lot to learn about one another over the next two days. We were encouraged to turn off and put away our cell phones, and to visit the reading library at the back of the classroom. We were also further encouraged to take notes between sessions in addition to the materials in session.

We’ll have a final examination at the end, and we’ll want to jot down “which things make a great teacher” so you can use that to complete your final exam

Great Teachers

David Godfrey started in the 1970. He did not know how to teach effectively and he has built a program like this to learn more. It is all over the nation, and has been adapted to an international movement. The Council of Excellence was charged by Bryan Ryan to “increase excellence” at the college. The Great Teachers Conference was an existing item that they visited in 2016 and found how excellent the idea was. This is the third annual seminar, and is funded moving forward for several years. This “energizes faculty” as noted by dr. Gayle Green.

Teaching is difficult and you’ll only learn as set of working best practices from one another. This conference is for teachers only, those down in the trenches. Experts are not invited. They are not welcome here. The keynote today is not a single idea. The power is in diversity. We’ll be kicking around outside of our departments. We have Professional Development to learn different ideas, but we can use this opportunity to get to know a larger more diverse group of people within the school, and get to know them better.

You Are Encouraged To Write Thank You Letters.

While we are here, we have been encouraged to think deeply about our situation, our performance in the classroom, what we’ve learned while we’re here, and what we’ll be able to bring back to the classroom. We are also encouraged- if we feel the spirit- to write letters if we like it. It can be forwarded on, compiled, etc. to the powers that be which make this a reality. They appreciate the feedback and this really keeps the conference going.

“There is no pre-planned agenda. It is made as simple as possible so that we can have a flowing agenda. There is no “this is what you need” keynote. It has to be uncovered as you go. We’ll let you know where to go and what you’ll do. Food is here, rooms are here. How can we teach a little bit made well? If we all increase a small amount each week, we’ll do better.

“This seminar is about you, and every one of us has their own flavors. Pick and choose. Today we’ll share our innovations, lunch will follow at 11:30 in Debose Hall, and then back here at 12:30pm. Tonight we’ll be working on tricks of the trade, but for now, lets live in the moment.

We come from different parts of the college, but we can share ideas, stealing like a ninja. Adjust ideas to share in your class. There is NO need for humble apologies. We’ll run in 10 minute increments, so be ready to talk and listen.”

 

Our Commandments:

  • Thou shalt provide equal time- if you drone on, shut up. You can always continue conversations with others. Talk often, but do not dominate.
  • No whining, griping, or telling war stories. Whining is complaining, griping is when two people are complaining together. War Stories are told trying to outdo one another.
  • Thou shalt mutually enforce these commandments. We police ourselves. Don’t take things personally.

Closing

Remember, this conference is about you. Our facilitators will be doing the listening and not talking. You cannot listen and talk at the same time. They are listening, teachers should be talking and discussing. Don’t engage the facilitators, focus on the groups and group members.

EPIC Online Student and Faculty Preparedness

To remove learning barriers and better support online student learning, persistence and success, Wake Tech has launched a QEP based on best practices in eLearning called EPIC. A collaborative effort by faculty and staff to develop and implement eLearning Standards, an online student orientation, and a faculty certification program. I enjoyed the beginning of this program, but unfortunately I was not able to catch the entire show, and that was a shame.

Presenters were smart, informative, and easy to follow.

Curriculum Division Meeting 2015

Change is the new norm. Our major mantra will become: access, success, quality. We, as faculty, make those three things happen, and happen well for our community.

DSS SERVICES

DSS for students. We make the education accessible to students with disabilities. These three are the what they do. we hope to assure that students with disabilities should be able t do what non-disabled students do. Disabled students should be able to access books on the bus, 2am study sessions just the same as a non-disabled student.

documentation will be received from DSS Students, and those will be interpreted and forwarded to you.

Testing time is important. Extended testing time holds our DSS students to the same standards within the framework of the class. IDEA laws in high school are different than those in the college curriculum. We are really interested in access. We cannot modify the curriculum just based on their DSS Status. Assistance may be given in one form or another, although these things are not

Don’t hesitate to reach out ot students, but also don’t be offended if you are contacted by DSS and requested to have full access to the course materials. Department heads may be notified to discuss accommodations.

DEAN UPDATES

Applied Technologies: Applied Engineering,  Skilled Trades, and Engineering Technologies. We recently received 4 grants: DOL grant for mission critical operations, duke energy acquisition grant, duke energy robotic welding grants. Close to $500,000 in total. New staff members hired.

100% interior design students received job offers through WBL work-based-learning, 4 sections had 100% retention, 100% success.

NC apprenticeship program has 7 sponsors uniting industry and program needs.

Business & Public Services Technologies: New staff members hired. 3¬†faculty members moved to administrative department head status. 3¬†new associate degree programs have been opened. We’ve had our first graduate from our business analytics dept $2.9million grant.

12% growth with 12,000+ students. Department-heads very actively recruiting adjuncts.

Many new certificates have been added: 2 in business analysis, 2 in CGA exams.

Computer Technologies: 3 departments now: admin department head Medical Office. Cindy Halliday or computer science and digital art dept. Cyndi foster, alison consol, phil eckhardt (cs/db). Networkiing computer tech. Bob miller and carolyn desimone. building structures and supprt. Sme new hires, but we’re still growning

big alignment project. MATT, CINDY, BOB on board with realigning classes with groups across the state. New classes developed, classes offered, books and pre-reqs developed. Grant realignment with Medical Office.

Partnership with NETAPP, success on hiring. Netapp has offered WBL for students, ALL STUDENTS. Excellent partnership is CISCO systems has hired more students through WBL than we can count over the years. This year, RED HAT is hiring our students through WBL. We’ll be pushing industry relationships in new RTP Campus.

In 2017 we’ll be ffering many classes at RTP

oHealth Science: 6 new faculty hired. New asistant to the dean, new associate dean, interrim department head, new department heads. over 4,000 registered students, and 711 are completely new this semester. Several departments are growing their departments, but passing rates at this time is 99%. We feel it is due to mentoring and dedicated advising. Searchtag will be phased out at the end of the year due to student success with employment or lack thereof- the program did not work.

95% of health science classes are accredited through discipline. Nursing program has been recently reaccrivdited, med assist, ems will also be re-accrediting this year.

CONCLUSION

100% challenge. $600,000 in Perkins grant funding. We want to ramp up advising skills. We will hire and embed professional advisors to train you. Know your students.

We want you to get certified and accredited. If there is a certification in your field, we want you to have it. We want to have the most skilled faculty on the planet. She challenges us t learn those certifications. If there aren’t any for us in the discipline, find something and share.

Foundation giving. Remember that money can circle back t you. That money can be used for things in which the department cannot use. Specify that the department should receive that funding. earmark that money back to your department/division. Host a scholarship or grant, its easier than you think.

New 954 form (missed or cancelled from) is going away. New instructions will cover this change and r materials.

Big initiatives are here. We need t advise our students of a one-way track to success. We are always looking for new students to complete their success. Create pathways to success for your students so that they can build on success and be job-ready as soon as humanly possible.

Competency-based education.we want to help NC Community College create the framework for competency-based education. how fast will they move, how will they pay, when will they graduate, what will accreditors say, how will financial aid take this? CBEN website for more.

Benchmarking should be targeted to student success. we are measured on completion. we are not measured on job or college acquire. Benchmark new and innovative ways t benchmark student success.

We are looking into automatically awarding certificates and degrees upon completion. However, this may trigger loan payback through some organizations. We are looking into this. We already collect courses from students who transfer to 4-year schools, and then award Associate degrees for work completed at those levels.

Ask your students to ask for certificates early and often. Ask them NOT to apply for their certification until they have completed them, and ensure that students have changed/declared their major on the way to completing the declaration.

Advising 102

This was a great method of determining the best ways to encourage students to sign up for certifications, diplomas, and our associate degrees. The emphasis here was on completions, math courses which could be accepted, and updates to evaluate course progressions, and the ease of helping students to complete their diploma programs by helping them to register for graduation.

In the second half of the department meeting, we focused on EPIC preparedness. This was equal parts course preparedness, menu building, and standards. This concluded with a longer, more team-oriented approach entitled “On The Border”.

The only strange part of this encounter was that a faculty member from chemistry signed up for our department meeting. That guy had no idea what we were talking about, and frankly didn’t really care about our policies. So, that was a waste of his time, and he chose to stay until the end. I’d do this again every semester.

Creating Quality Rubrics

Quality Matters is a national benchmark for online courses. The presenters took courses from Quality Matters to be certified as peer reviewers of online classes using QM Basic.

Development of the Rubric

Using the research and structure of other rubrics to create a standardized rubric. This has been amended 9 times based on feedback from experienced online faculty. This consistency is helpful for students as well as teachers.

The purpose of this is to establish a college0-wide quality standard for online classes and a tool for course evaluation. To achieve a e-learning qualtiy seal from wake tech for your online course, all essential standards and 90% of recommended standards must be met. This may be easier for teachers than receiving the training.

EPIC certification is roughly 30 hours, but many teachers have already taken. You might be able to take only 2/3rds of the training or you might put a course on the chopping block for meeting the standards of the course. This tool can also be used to gain insight into teacher needs and recommended remediation. Some courses may benefit from looking at the current rubric and adjusting their courses accordingly. Feedback will be heavily important in the establishment of success. Large courses with high enrollment will begin, and many will begin in Spring 2015.

    Going over a 16,10,8-week courses isn’t a fast process. It will take time.Will a failure indicate the need for education? minor adjustments may be a pass with adjustments, large sections will include the optional recommendation for remediation. Most courses should have (would certainly benefit from) departmental review and oversite before submitted.
